What's New at NOS - June 2024

Hey there, summer seekers! The excitement is in the air as we gear up for a season packed with adventure. This month we're prepping for summer camp, counting down the days to Nature in the Park events, and eager to hit the trails with the Backpacking Club, get ready for an epic summer ahead. Stay safe and get outside!

Bike School - June 1st

On Saturday June 1st Christy attended the Bike School training.  The instructors were Kyle and Tyler.  They had motorcycles already there for us to use, and we just needed to bring our helmets and wear the proper gear.

They first spoke to us about safety and gave us tips and pointers for control.

Next, we went over:

  1. The parts of the motorcycles.

  2. Proper mounting.

  3. How to start them.

  4. How to shift gears.

  5. Starting off.

  6. Stopping.

  7. Turning.

  8. Standing and sitting while in motion.

  9. And finally shifting gears.

There was an obstacle course set up with cones.  Kyle and Tyer were patient and very helpful when giving instructions on how to improve and where we were going wrong. I have to say I had an absolute blast!  This made me want to buy a motorcycle and start riding! I highly recommend this training for anyone thinking about riding, and anyone looking to improve their riding skills.

Tri-County Market Day - June 8th

On Saturday, June 8th William and Ash Attended the Tri-County Market, they set up everything and waited for people to show as they showed up to their booth they would inform them about what Nevada outdoor school is and how we educate all ages on the outdoors, and how they host community hikes, along with summer camps, they were able to get around 70 people.

Battle Mountain Bike Rodeo - June 14th

Nevada Outdoor School members William and Christy attended the Battle Mountain Bike Rodeo, where they were there promoting off-road vehicle safety. They demonstrated how you can tell if your helmet is still good to use or if it's not safe to use anymore. They taught why a helmet is safer to wear and how it saves a lot of lives, they also talked about their program and events coming up; such as community hikes, summer camps, and so much more!

Summer Camp Training - June 17-21

This year’s summer camp training was a lot of fun.  We covered all of the 7 principles of Leave No Trace, various scenarios based upon previous experiences at camp, preparing food and entertainment, as well as hiking and swimming.  It was a great experience, and we all had a great time.  The only real hiccup was the freezing temperatures at the beginning of the week.  However, we were strong and persevered!  It was a hard lesson on preparedness, given by Mother Nature. Christy was awed by the beauty of Lamoille Canyon and ended up with way more scenic pictures than photos with people.  She will focus more on people pictures during my summer camp in Cathedral Gorge State Park.  We have new ideas to incorporate into our camp schedule and a better understanding of how to run a camp.  Overall, it was a great experience.

Elko Adventure Camp - June 24-27

On June 25th through the 27th, Nevada Outdoor School Hosted a Youth Backpacking Trip. For our backpacking trip, Brandolyn and Jamie hiked with 5 kids ages 13-17. We hiked up the mountain about 2 miles and it was kind of tough but once we got to the top it was worth it. We set up camp right by Island Lake and did some Leave No Trace Training and by the evening time it started raining so we had to get in our tents a little early. The next days we spent by the water and took a hike further up the mountain where we did more LNT and other games and activities. The wind and rain started picking up once again and had to move into our tents for a second time. The weather was the only issue during our trip but other than that we had a blast, and we hope the kids did as well.

Elko Bike Rodeo - June 28

Nevada Outdoor School recently attended Nevada Gold Mine’s Elko Bike Rodeo on June 28th, where kids from the community enjoyed a day of fun and learning on two wheels. The event, held at Adobe Middle School, gave local children the opportunity to get outside and learn some bike safety in the process. Each participant received a helmet and got the chance to have their bike checked and repaired. The kids could then ride their bikes on a course and work on their skills.

Meghan and Toril had the opportunity to promote “Ride Safe, Ride Smart,” and invite participants to future Nevada Outdoor School Events. The kids played cornhole, designed bike helmets, were quizzed on bike safety, and had the opportunity to win some prizes. It was great to see the community getting outside and staying safe while riding their bikes!
