For the past three months, Daniela Mayorga has been serving with Nevada Outdoor School as an AmeriCorps Volunteer Outdoor Educator. A Winnemucca native, Daniela has found her AmeriCorps experience to be an opportunity to learn new skills, explore the outdoors, and make a positive impact in the community she calls home.
Born and raised in Winnemucca, Daniela first learned about the AmeriCorps program through NOS's AmeriCorps Program Director, Zulma. Daniela was drawn to the opportunity because she knew the position would allow her to learn new skills while gaining experiences she might not otherwise have had.
For Daniela, AmeriCorps is about much more than service hours. It is an opportunity to grow while helping others discover the outdoors.
“AmeriCorps is an agency that helps members to improve their lives by learning outdoor skills and teaching it to communities,” Daniela shared. “It is important because we get the opportunity to learn and grow, influence and change our community positively.”
During her time with NOS, Daniela has had the chance to build her own outdoor knowledge while sharing that knowledge with children, families, and community members throughout Northern Nevada. One of the biggest impacts her service has had on her personally has been the opportunity to learn new outdoor skills and discover how she can apply them in her own life.
At the same time, she has seen firsthand how outdoor education can bring people together.
“During my service experience, being able to see the community have fun and enjoy the outdoors, the lessons, presentations, and activities I believe has made an impact,” Daniela said.
One of Daniela’s favorite experiences so far has been Tahoe Voyagers Camp. Spending time outdoors with campers and helping them explore, learn, and build confidence created a memorable experience that she will carry with her beyond her service term.
As her first AmeriCorps term comes to an end, Daniela is already looking toward what comes next. Rather than saying goodbye to AmeriCorps, she plans to re-enroll for another term so she can continue learning, developing her skills, and serving her community.
“I very much appreciate the opportunity to serve the community and make a positive impact. I enjoyed my term,” Daniela said.
Nevada Outdoor School is grateful for the energy, enthusiasm, and dedication Daniela has brought to her service. Her willingness to learn, grow, and share her love of the outdoors is a wonderful example of the impact AmeriCorps members can have in rural Nevada communities.
We are excited to see where Daniela’s next chapter takes her, and even more excited that she plans to continue serving and learning with AmeriCorps!
