Destination Recreation: Nevada’s Best Overnight Backpacking Loops

Nevada is home to some of the most breathtaking and remote landscapes in the West, making it a backpacker's paradise. From alpine lakes and mountain peaks to desert canyons and ancient forests, the Silver State offers countless opportunities to unplug and immerse yourself in nature.

If you're looking to take your hiking adventures to the next level, an overnight backpacking trip is a rewarding way to experience Nevada's wild places. Here are a few of the state's best backpacking loops that offer incredible scenery, memorable campsites, and unforgettable experiences.

Liberty Lake Loop – Ruby Mountains

Located just outside Elko, the Ruby Mountains are often called the "Swiss Alps of Nevada" for their dramatic peaks and crystal-clear alpine lakes.

The Liberty Lake Loop is a favorite among experienced hikers. This route takes backpackers through lush meadows, across mountain passes, and past stunning alpine lakes. During the summer months, hikers are treated to colorful wildflowers, abundant wildlife, and panoramic views of the surrounding wilderness.

Why you'll love it:

  • Alpine lakes and mountain scenery
  • Excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing
  • Beautiful wildflower displays
  • Cooler summer temperatures

Toiyabe Crest Trail Loop – Toiyabe Range

The Toiyabe Range offers one of Nevada's longest mountain ranges and some of its most peaceful backcountry.

By combining sections of the Toiyabe Crest Trail with connecting forest roads and trails, backpackers can create rewarding overnight loops that travel through aspen groves, high-elevation forests, and expansive mountain ridges.

Highlights include:

  • Panoramic mountain views
  • Quiet campsites
  • Aspen forests that glow in the fall
  • Opportunities to spot mule deer and other wildlife

Wheeler Peak Area – Great Basin National Park

While Great Basin National Park is best known for Wheeler Peak and the ancient bristlecone pine forests, adventurous hikers can turn several connecting trails into memorable overnight trips.

Spend the night beneath some of the darkest skies in the country before continuing your journey through alpine terrain, glacial lakes, and high mountain forests.

Don't miss:

  • Stella and Teresa Lakes
  • Ancient bristlecone pines
  • Incredible stargazing
  • Cooler mountain temperatures

Jarbidge Wilderness Loops

Hidden in northeastern Nevada, the Jarbidge Wilderness remains one of the state's best-kept secrets.

Several interconnected trails allow experienced backpackers to create overnight loops through rugged canyons, mountain streams, and alpine meadows. The area's solitude makes it an excellent destination for those seeking a true wilderness experience.

Expect to find:

  • Remote backcountry solitude
  • Mountain creeks and waterfalls
  • Diverse wildlife
  • Spectacular mountain scenery

Arc Dome Wilderness

The Arc Dome Wilderness offers a variety of loop options for backpackers looking to explore central Nevada.

High ridgelines, open meadows, and forested valleys provide constantly changing scenery while offering opportunities to camp far from busy trailheads.

Perfect for:

  • Intermediate to experienced backpackers
  • Wildflower viewing
  • Scenic ridgeline hiking
  • Peaceful camping

Before You Go

Backpacking requires more preparation than a day hike. Before heading out, take time to plan your route and prepare for changing weather conditions.

Remember to:

  • Research current trail conditions.
  • Carry plenty of water or a reliable water filter.
  • Pack the Ten Essentials.
  • Tell someone where you're going and when you plan to return.
  • Check weather forecasts before leaving.
  • Follow Leave No Trace principles throughout your trip.

Leave No Trace Matters

Nevada's backcountry is beautiful because people work together to protect it.

Practice responsible recreation by:

  • Camping on durable surfaces.
  • Packing out all trash.
  • Respecting wildlife.
  • Staying on established trails whenever possible.
  • Leaving natural and cultural features where you find them.
  • Being considerate of other visitors.

Small actions help preserve these incredible places for future generations.
