What's New at NOS - July 2024

Welcome to our latest adventure-packed blog post! As summer unfolds, we're diving into the joys of outdoor activities that bring communities together. From the exhilarating experiences at youth fishing derbies to the camaraderie found in community hikes and the enriching growth fostered at summer camps, there's something for everyone to discover in the great outdoors. Join us as we explore the many events that make this season unforgettable for families and friends alike!

July 8th-11th - Pathfinders Cathedral Gorge Camp

From July 8th to 11th, our AmeriCorps member led six campers on an exciting trip to Cathedral Gorge. They visited several sites, including Kershaw-Ryan Park, Panaca Warm Springs, and Echo Canyon. The group also learned all seven Leave No Trace principles. The campers enjoyed exploring the area, completing two hikes, and engaging in various crafts and games, such as making clay bowls and pirate hats. It was an unforgettable experience for everyone involved!

July 10th - Junior Ranger Day

The objective was to swear in new Junior Rangers for the California Trail Center. The kids and their parents went around the center with their maps and went to different tables to do different activities. The NOS activity was making Leave No Trace keychains with beads. Jamie and Manny helped with those while Nikki did the Trash Timeline game. The AmeriCorps members really enjoyed helping them make keychains and also talking with the parents about the future camps that we have and making them, and the kids feel excited about learning about taking care of the environment while also having fun and enjoying the outdoors!

July 12th-13th - CTIC Time Travelers Overnight Camp

During their overnight stay at the museum, campers immersed themselves in a unique pioneer experience that included sleeping inside a covered wagon. Engaging in a variety of hands-on activities, such as gold panning, archery, atlatl throwing, and crafting pioneer artifacts, they gained practical insights into the daily lives and skills of pioneers. The interactive learning sessions, featuring scavenger hunts and "cookie mining," provided valuable lessons on the historical significance of the California Trail and the challenges pioneers encountered, including environmental impacts. Encouraged by games and collaborative group tasks, campers developed teamwork and camaraderie, mirroring the cooperative spirit essential for pioneer survival. They also explored their artistic talents through watercolor painting, pottery making, and leather stamping, linking creative expression with historical themes. The culmination of their journey was marked by a Pioneer Award Ceremony, where campers were honored for their engagement and achievements. The ceremony underscored the learning objectives while celebrating their profound connection to pioneer history, complete with hand-churned ice cream to cap off the memorable experience.

July 15th-18th - Winnemucca Adventure Camp

The campers found the "Leave No Trace" lessons particularly engaging, fostering a deeper appreciation for environmental responsibility. A highlight of the camp was the fossil scavenger hunt, which sparked curiosity and excitement among the participants. Their adventure extended to the Humboldt County Museum, where they explored local history and culture. Creativity flourished when the campers were given the opportunity to paint anything they desired, resulting in a vibrant display of artwork. Additionally, they took part in a stewardship project at Water Canyon, where both campers and staff collaborated to clean out the garden bed, contributing to the preservation and beauty of the natural area!

July 20th - Angel Lake Kids Fishing Derby

The AmeriCorps members recently attended the Angel Lake Kids Fishing Derby, where they had a wonderful time participating in activities like trash line trivia and corn hole. It was also great to see the U.S. Forest Service present at the event. They distributed NOS flyers and engaged with many enthusiastic participants. The highlight of the event for members was reuniting with former NOS campers and witnessing their excitement upon seeing the team again.

July 26th - Island Lake Ecology Hike

On July 26th, NOS Members Noah, Manny, and NOS Volunteer Evelyn joined a participant on a hike up to Lamoille’s Island Lake! Smoke from a recent wildfire had filled the canyon, but it cleared up throughout the day. They discussed Leave No Trace principles and their application to outdoor adventures. They also examined the world through the process of nature journaling. After making it to the top, the group took a lunch break and then enjoyed free time hiking and exploring the area. A few of them even took a dip in the lake. Overall, the hike was both refreshing and fun!

July 29th-August 1st - Elko Adventure Camp 2

On July 29th the second Elko Adventure Camp took place. AmeriCorps members Nicole, Jamie, and Manny prepared for a week of fun and adventure. Due to the smoke coming from recent wildfires in the area, the camp was moved inside but that didn't stop the members from making sure the kids had fun! Between bowling, archery, movies, and going to different museums, the kids had an awesome and educational time while they learned the Leave No Trace principles.
